Being homeless, many for the first time, they don't know where to turn. The kids who come to Horizons are confused and afraid. The "thrill" of the street life doesn't last long and the reality usually dissuades even the most adventurous teenager. Being 16, homeless and vulnerable means that many people are able to take advantage of you. Not knowing how to survive, they may turn to prostitution, selling drugs, or even worse to make it on the street.

Horizons attempts to get to these kids before this happens.

At Horizons, we give them more than just a bed out of the cold.more than just a hot meal. Horizons for Youth gives them hope; hope of finding a job, securing housing so that they can become independent members of our community. Hope for a positive future.

When they come to our door, many don't know how to budget, rent an apartment or even cook for themselves. At Horizons for Youth, each resident is assigned a one-on-one Case Worker to support them every step of the way. From here, we teach homeless and at risk youth the life skills they need to be able to live successfully on their own.

The kids who come to Horizons don't have to end up living in alleyways, sleeping on grates or park benches. They're young and vibrant and have so much potential. Together, we have a great opportunity and a responsibility to help them to become the best they can be!

With your help, we can give them something they so desperately need, a safe place with supportive staff to help them get their lives on track.

Umbrella Day Raises $14,000

Horizons for Youth is excited to announce that our 7th Annual Umbrella Day on Thursday, April 8th, 2010 raised $14,002.87 this year during our one day event.  Even with the economy recovering, people still took the time to donate towards a good cause, and for this we are very grateful.  Thank you to all those who donated, you have helped us help our youth.

Thank you so much to all staff, Board Members and most importantly our volunteers, who took the time out of their busy schedules to help raise awareness and much needed funds for Horizons for Youth’s programs and services.

Success Stories Title
Soraya came to us fleeing an abusive arranged marriage.  She came in a shy girl who had difficulty looking anyone in the face.  Now she is a college graduate and works as an executive assistant at a car dealership.

Richard came to us after his only family, his grandmother, passed away. Richard had some untreated health issues as well and at first was very reluctant to see a doctor.  Today Richard is healthy and works with a security alarm company.

Claudia lived on the streets and in shelters for the better part of 5 years while struggling with her mental health issues.  It took a lot of time to develop the trust needed to Claudia to get the right kind of treatment.  Today she is the poster child for a youth apprenticeship program.
